Personal recollection about the 1946 Laredo, MO fires

We were living in Pratt, Kansas at the time when the fires were set in Laredo, but the incident made the national radio news broadcast. My mother, Florence, immediately placed a person-to-person call to her father in Laredo, but when the Pratt operator connected with the Laredo operator and requested to speak with him, the Laredo operator said "We can't receive any calls except official calls, but Florence, your folks are OK!"
